Richard Bruner’s Original Tune Collection
I wrote my first fiddle tune at age 8, and I’ve been writing tunes ever since! I am currently working on a collection of new tunes as well as some of my favorites from years past. It’s not finished yet, but in the meantime here’s a sample of some of the tunes that will be included. Click the titles to view the sheet music (pdf).
First Day Out - A hornpipe written in May of 2020, expressing how I will feel when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown is over and we can all go out safely without restrictions!
The Sunshine Jig - Written at the height of the summer in Los Angeles in 2020, a sunny sounding jig in A major.
Jig of ‘A’s - A concept tune. I was experimenting with what could be done just repeatedly playing the note “A” and using accent to make it interesting. I then tried to see how few notes I could vary to make a developed tune with distinct A and B sections. I added a third section later and continued to develop the A and B sections and this is the result!
The Rollicking Faeries - An A major reel written around Halloween of 2006.
In The Woods on the Hill - This slow air was submitted for the 2019 Scottish F.I.R.E. Composition Competition, where it won 3rd place. It will be performed by the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles at the next show, in a set with three other tunes I wrote.
Lament for a Lost Age - An elegy for the people lost in the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. A Scottish-style lament. [Click the title for the full sheet music, click here for a version with simplified chords - no inversions listed].
March of the Fall - My submission for the 2021 Scottish F.I.R.E. Composition Competition. This one got 2nd place!
The School Set: Final Exam Jig / Summer Break Jig - Two jigs I wrote during finals week my second semester (Spring 2024) at California State University, Northridge while working on my Master’s degree in Music Composition. You can tell I’ve been tutoring too many undergraduate harmony classes when I start using augmented 6th and Neapolitan 6th chords in my fiddle tunes!
Full arrangement of the Jig of ‘A’s and the Sunshine Jig - Fiddle, High E tin whistle (on 2nd tune), Guitar, Piano, Bodhran. All live.
Full recording of Lament for a Lost Age - fiddle and piano.
